The labor industry has changed big time throughout the
years. If your parents experienced job security 2 to 3 decades ago, that is
because most employers, value committed employees and would normally keep
them under different circumstances for as long as they wanted to stay.
For the most part today, job security is just a word because if your employer
is dissatisfied with your performance, he can replace you anytime. Your
employer knows that as much as he needs people he can trust in his
organization, he also needs competitive and success driven individuals to run
his business, and he will be willing to lay you off if he sees that you are not
what he has expected you to be and if you are not an asset to his company
anymore.
This is a sad reality and this is why you, as an employee
should accept that these things are happening to even the most seasoned
workers. Get used to the idea that you may have one job in your current career
and you may have to work for more than one company. Now, if you are given the
chance to work in one of the best companies in the region or in the country, do
the best that you can in order to make your boss happy and don't make him regret
that he included your name on his payroll.
The most important thing that you need to learn is to
manage your own career. Don't wait for your employer to assess your
performance; if possible, evaluate your job performance everyday. If you want
career advancement, then start taking responsibility for your own career
development because nobody can make you become successful other than you
yourself. Choose your own career path because if you don't, somebody might do
it for you and there is no guarantee that you will like what they planned for
your career.
Check your skills every now and then and find out if you
still have the same expertise as you have had before. Strive to develop as an
employee by learning new skills and enhancing your current ones to be up to
date with the demand of the labor industry today. Have an open mind and
identify career opportunities that might boost your career and make sure that
you always give your 100% in everything that you do at work.
The success of your career lies entirely in your hands and
better career management will help
you achieve this success in no time. Be mindful of how you perform inside the
office and no matter what happens, make sure that your boss is pleased with the
results of the tasks that he has placed in your care.
