Career Coaching Advice on How to Make Your Resume Stand Out

The number of people looking for jobs never goes down, and for hiring managers, this means having to read hundreds of application letters. As a job seeker, how can you make sure your resume does not belong to the batch that gets thrown in the bin?

In this post, you will learn a couple of easy ways you can make your resume stand out and really attractive to hiring managers or potential employers.

Here’s what you should do.

a. Make sure your resume contains important keywords.
We are in the digital era, so your job search will have to be done mostly online. In short, you will have to post your CV or resume on job sites, or you may also send or upload it directly on a company’s website. Since there will be many other job applicants using the same online method as you, it will be hard for employers to read resumes one by one. In most cases, employers use keywords to locate the most suitable resumes for the job they’re trying to fill. Thus, you have to make sure your resume has the right keywords and phrases that employers will probably search for.

b. Choose a simple and neat design.
An ugly looking resume will never stand a chance of getting picked by an employer. It is important that your resume design be as simple as possible, and pleasant to look at. There are many ways you can make this happen.

First of all, use a simple, clean and professional font, such as Time New Roman, Arial, or Verdana. Check the font size also to ensure your resume is easy to read. In terms of the content of your resume, it needs to have enough white space. Use bullets if possible, and don’t use very long sentences or paragraphs as this will turn readers off.

c. Insert a customized profile.
A profile at the top of your resume will make it unique and noticeable. Make sure that whatever you write in it is tailored for the job you’re applying to. Basically, your profile should include your experience, abilities and important skills, which should all be relevant to the requirements of the job you want to land. Your profile also has to be specific and eye-catching. Keep in mind also that this profile will introduce you to the employer, so it has to be a good one.

d. Market it using social media.

Even career coaching experts are saying that marketing your resume on social networking sites should be part of any job seeker’s job hunt strategy. By posting your application documents on such websites, you are actually letting all your networks and contacts know that you are looking for a job.

This is an effortless way of getting the word out about your job search.
