Why Is It Beneficial to Have Long-Term Career Planning?

Having long-term career plans is vital in making the right decisions about your present and future professional life. If you're sure about where you want your career to be, you need long-term planning to have an idea about what steps will help you get there. Planning your career path also allows you to set a specific timetable for reaching your goals.

Strategic Planning

Having a long-term plan for your career will encourage you to take a closer look at your credentials, education, aspirations, and talents, all of which are essential in drafting a course of action that will place you on the path to success. Strategic planning is all about evaluating your present location, the kind of education you should have, and what financial future you have ahead of you.

Goals and Measurements

When your initial plan is in place, you may begin setting measurable goals for yourself. If, for instance, you are a manager in your company and you wish to get a vice president position, you should plan what is required to get there. Perhaps you should have more years in the company, get an MBA, or perhaps reach a particular quota of revenue for the company. With all this information in hand, it will be easier for you to set measurable actions.

Ongoing Training and Education

Many careers require continuing education and training. With a concrete career plan in place, you will be in a good position to plan for whatever training or additional education you may need. The last thing you want is to be in a position of applying for your dream job and feeling confident about your qualification, only to find out that you don't have some of the requirements for the position.

FInancial Security

By creating a long-term career plan, you may be able to achieve financial security and stability. You have to have a clear understanding of your earning potential in your career. This way, you can make smart and informed decisions, especially when it comes to making investments for your future.

Conclusion

Planning your career is no easy task. There are a lot of things you need to take into consideration before you could come up with a plan that is concrete and long term. But the good thing is that you don't have to go through this complex process all on your own.

Working with a career coach is recommended if you want to do the right career planning. A career coach is someone who will talk to you about your personal and career goals. He or she will want to know what you want for your career, and will discuss with you ways that will enable you to reach each of your goals.

Can Chatting with Your Boss Help You Succeed in Career Planning?

When speaking of networking, perhaps you would instantly imagine talking to other professionals during conferences and other meetups or formal events. But did you know that your workplace also offers an excellent opportunity for networking? Yes, you can expand your network inside your office, provided that you talk to the right people. As a matter of fact, career experts even say that if you have never tried to have a chat with your boss, you are definitely missing out on a huge and significant career opportunity.

Why Do You Need to Talk to Your Boss?

Relationships are key to a successful career, and communication is a main ingredient in building good relationships. When you talk to your boss and engage him or her in your plans and ideas, you make them feel like they are important to the success of the team, and that you value their opinion. This is a great way to establish trust between you and your boss.

Tips for Talking with Your Boss

1. It isn’t a good idea to schedule a meeting with your boss at the beginning or end of the day.

Your boss is always busy in the morning as he or she is trying to finish the most important tasks for the day, and at the end of the day, your boss is just like you who can’t wait to leave the office. And so, the best time to schedule a meeting would be anywhere between before and after lunch.

2. Keep the meeting short (30 minutes is ideal).

Your boss has tons of things to do, so you don’t want to be the reason he or she will not be able to accomplish work on time. Besides, 30 minutes is enough to have a meaningful and engaging conversation with your boss.

3. Talk about common interests not related to work.

One effective way of building a good relationship with your boss is to engage him or her in a conversation about their personal interests. If you love sports and your boss does too, then this topic should give you a common ground which you can both talk enthusiastically about.

4. Be more of a listener rather than a speaker.

Being a willing listener is a good trait when you’re trying to build a good relationship with someone, especially your superiors. By asking smart questions, you can make your boss feel knowledgeable, smart, and important. This could then be his or her reason to like you. You may even seek advice from your boss regarding how you should deal with certain work issues you are facing.

Networking is about meeting and building connections with people who may eventually help you out with your career planning, and this is the reason why you should make an effort to spend time and have good conversations with your boss from time to time.

Career Planning: 5 Ways You Are Making Your Coworkers Hate You

It is said that doing great in your job can easily earn you the respect of your coworkers, and the management as well. But oftentimes, respect is not enough to give you the advancement in your job and career that you want. In reality, you need to be liked by the people you work for and work with.

It is for that reason that you have to make an effort to be friendly and courteous to every person in the workplace. Also, it is important that you not make yourself someone others will get annoyed with and hated.

The following are the possible reasons you could get your coworkers to dislike you, which you should also avoid if you want to keep a good image at work:

1. You suck at email.
Everyone nowadays is expected to know how to use email. But knowing how to send an email is just not enough; more importantly, you need to know and practice email etiquette. This means that you should NOT use the ‘urgent’ indicator all the time, use unfathomable subject lines, or write very long and useless messages. Do your own research so you could learn what the Do’s and Don’ts are in sending emails.

2. You have an overly decorated cubicle.
There is nothing wrong with making your workspace comfortable, but make sure that you keep it looking professional and formal. You want people in the workplace to respect and like you as a professional, and not for the cute decors you have on your desk and everywhere in your cube.

3. You’re a dirty eater.
It is common for employees to eat at their desks because they are too busy to even go to the cafeteria to eat lunch. But when you eat at your desk, don’t forget that you are eating with your coworkers around you. Thus, you shouldn’t forget your table manners. In most surveys of what annoying habits workers hate about their cubemates, ‘loud chewing’ is always one of the answers that come up.

4. You are a slob.
Another thing that will automatically make your colleagues hate you is being a slob. Take a look at your desk. Is it messy? Do you throw smelly garbage into the trash can near your other coworkers? Do you leave coffee cups and other dirty dishes in the office sink? Just because nobody is talking to you about your mess doesn’t mean nobody notices how untidy you are.

5. You let everyone know how much you know.
It’s okay to be good at something, especially if you have the skills and experience to prove that you are good, but there are times when you don’t need to tell people you know something. Nobody likes someone who’s a ‘know-it-all’.

If you want to advance in your career planning, you’ve got to make people like you, and you can do this by not doing or being any of the things mentioned above.

Career Planning: Common Reasons People Are Job Hopping

If you’ve been struggling to stay in one job and it has made you a serial job hopper, this post is for you. The purpose of this article is not to criticize you, but instead, to motivate you. While it is true that job hoppers seem to lack the ability to commit to a long-term employment, they often have good intentions, too! Thus, I could understand how frustrating it must be to not be able to find the right job that is worth holding on to.

If you’re open enough to admit that you are a job hopper, it is important that you find out what’s going on, and what could be causing this situation you are in so that you may also find a way to resolve it.

Here are the common reasons why many of us end up jumping from one job to another:

1. To discover oneself.

Many employed individuals go through the challenging journey of self-discover. This is especially true among younger professionals out there. They bounce from one employer to another because they want to explore their options. Apparently, it is hard to know what you really enjoy if you don’t have enough experience yet. Sometimes, you really need to try out different jobs so you can determine what it is you don’t like to do, and what you really like to do.

2. Wrong job search strategy.

It is possible that you are not able to find the right job because your approach to job search was not good in the first place. For instance, applying for a job that you didn’t research about could end up in you having to do things you really don’t like doing. As a result, you quit your job and look for another one. But using the same wrong job search strategy, chances are you will end up in another job that does not suit you.

If you want to find a job that you will truly enjoy, you have to be smart right from the start. Make sure you are applying for a job that fits your personality and your passion.

3. Failure to adjust to workplace culture.

One common reason for changing jobs is one’s inability to adjust to the existing workplace culture in an organization. This is a serious issue if you are someone who is not willing to totally adapt to a place. There is actually nothing wrong with constantly looking for a place where you feel comfortable, but you also have to consider that perhaps, you also need to learn how to adjust to your surroundings, because in the end, you will benefit a lot from it. Remember that for your careerplanning to succeed, you need to be open to change.

The Importance of Career Planning Is One Reason Your Employee May Leave You

Managers know so well how costly employee turnover can be, and so they work really hard to keep their prized employees inside the fence. The truth, however, is that not every worker intends to stay in the same company even though they are treated fairly. But then again, it is important for managers to know and acknowledge the things that cause employees to quit their jobs and find somewhere else to work.

The following are some common reasons employees leave their job:

a. They feel undervalued. Those who finally decide to leave their job are not actually looking to be praised every time they do something good at work. They just want to be reminded once in a while that they offer valuable contributions to the company. Ignoring them repeatedly will have them seek their value elsewhere.

b. They are not properly compensated. The issue of whether an employee is being compensated fairly is common in many organizations. This is also something that you have to address immediately as it can affect the morale of your team.

c. They don’t have enough time off from work. It is a huge mistake on the part of employers to give additional workload to employees in order to do more with less. Doing this can have a negative effect on employees’ health and well-being, and can eventually lead to high turnover rates.

d. Change in management. Changes are a necessity, especially if it’s going to be for the better. But employers have to understand also that a change in management can affect employees in many ways. Thus, it is important for companies to have a transition plan in place to address whatever issues or problems workers may face during the change.

e. Unreasonable and unrealistic goals. Setting quotas and others goals is vital to maintain productivity levels, but such goals need to be realistic and actually attainable. Otherwise, employees will always be pressured to produce something, and this can make them think that working elsewhere is a better option.

f. They need to be challenged. Effective leaders know for a fact that employees these days are not only after the money they can get from their companies. More importantly, they want career advancement. This is not always about promotion, though. Employees are more likely to stay in an organization that offers different opportunities for skills and career development.

g. They don’t see any clear path to success. Employees of today put so much importance into career planning and career building. Thus, it matters a lot to them to see a pathway to success in their jobs. If they don’t feel that their career is going in the right direction in the job that they have, they will not hesitate to find it somewhere else.

Career Planning: Resume Objective Mistakes to Avoid

To be competitive in the job market, most job seekers revise their resumes and make sure they don’t make mistakes in writing their resume objective. The objective statement is actually considered as the most difficult part of writing a resume. This is because of the fact that a well-written objective can easily get the attention of hiring managers, while writing a bad one can lead to your resume being ignored.

As you craft your resume, you’ve got to start on the right foot, and you can do this by coming up with a good career objective. Here are some mistakes to avoid:

1. Being too simple.
In writing your resume objective, think from a hiring manager’s perspective. It won’t help if you use a very simple one, like “To have a full time job with a stable company”. Obviously, this is your goal, but it’s way too obvious and uninteresting for potential employers.  What you want is to have a statement that clearly describes your interest in that particular job.

2. Leaving out details.
In your resume objective, make sure it contains some of the talents and skills that you possess and will give value to the company. For instance, you could say “Would love to be part of a growing company where I can utilize my 10 years of customer service experience to better serve customers”.

3. Not mentioning your goal.
You want your resume objective to state what you really want to achieve through the job you’re applying for. If you want career stability or career growth, then don’t hesitate to mention it in your objective. This will have hiring managers think that you’re looking for a long-term employment, and not just full time employment.

4. Being generic.
One of the biggest mistakes you can make in writing your resume is to create one that will be used to apply for different types of jobs. Yes, this method seems convenient and efficient on your part, but it is something that hiring managers really don’t like. Hiring managers read hundreds of resumes and application letters every single day, so they know which ones are specific and which ones are generic.

5. Being unrealistic.
There is no way you should exaggerate facts in your resume. If you’re a new graduate, for instance, you can’t say that you have extensive experience in a certain field. While it could be true that you have some real work experience from doing internships or even part time jobs, you shouldn’t claim to be someone you’re actually not.

Writing a resume is much like career planning. There are steps to follow, and things you should and shouldn’t do. You also need to dedicate some time in making your resume to make sure it represents you well as a professional and an individual.

Create Career Planning and Search Opportunities Through a Successful Networking Event

Networking events offer an excellent opportunity for professionals to find potential employers,
employees, and it allows individuals to learn more about the trends and innovations in their respective industries. If you have the means to host an event, you will have to make sure that you let your attendees leave feeling accomplished and satisfied with what they got from your event.

Below are useful business networking tips that will help make your event a successful one:

a.    Pick a Good Location

Just like any other events, the location plays a very important role in the success of the event. Be sure with the number of attendees you’re expecting before searching for the location itself. A facility that is too large could make the event seem under attended, while an extremely small one could end up very crowded and noisy.

Access to the facility and parking are important considerations as well. You would also want a location that isn't too formal, and where your attendees will feel comfortable and enthusiastic.

b. Notify Your Attendees Ahead

Advanced notification usually leads to good turnout. It won’t look good on you if guests feel that the event was organised at the last minute. You could use an elite service online to let people know about your event. Don't forget to follow up the important people through personal calls. It would be a good idea to use formal invitation as well.

c. Do Not Go Beyond Your Budget

While it’s important that you choose the best location, beverage and food choices, as well as decorations, you should not take for granted the costs. It is a must that you serve food, and you've got to be sure food doesn't run out during the event. The point is that you have to provide whatever it is your attendees need, but you have to keep everything within your budget.

d. Registration Is Vital

Don’t forget to provide your guests and attendees with name tags. This will help them identify one another, and will increase the chances of your attendees meeting the right people to help them with their professions or business. You would also want to have a copy of the names of those who participated in your event. You will surely find it useful in the long run.

e. Make an Effort to Connect Your Guests

It is recommended that you have a couple of individuals who will help you introduce people to one another. You have to know that although your attendees know what the networking is about and for, not all of them may be as confident and enthusiastic about meeting people. You will be greatly appreciated if you could make your event memorable by making it easy to meet new people, who could eventually help them with their career planning or career search.

Career Planning Strategies Every College Student Should Utilize

Generally speaking, students go to college so they could get a degree which will qualify them for the job that they want to have. Sadly, however, getting good grades in school can in no way guarantee that you will impress all employers. Thus, it is vital even for those who are still in college to do some career planning, so they can be ready for whatever challenges they may face.
If you want to be better equipped to promote yourself to potential employers, these are the strategies to follow:

1. Check out your school’s career center.
You don’t have to wait until you’re a few days before graduating to pay a visit to your school’s career center. It is common for colleges to provide students with assistance when it comes to finding internship programs, exploring graduate school, and even getting ready for a job search. If you want to gain relevant experience to add to your resume, you shouldn’t ignore the assistance that your school can offer.

2. Do a self-assessment.
The first thing employers would want to know is why you are the perfect candidate for the job they’re offering. This is the same question you need to answer about yourself. Make an effort to learn how your values, personality, preferences and skills actually affect your career decisions. There are lots of career assessment tools online or from your college career services that you may use for this purpose.

3. Know more about the careers that are relevant to your degree.
You chose your degree for a reason, and that is to get the skills and expertise required for a specific career or job. As graduation day nears, you’ve got to start thinking about the workplace. Are you ready to belong to a specific workplace?  What working conditions can you and can’t you handle? These are some of the questions you need to answer to make sure you’ll go to an organization where you will thrive and grow.

4. Be active in acquiring skills and experience.
While it is important that you graduate with good grades, it matters more to prospective employers that you somehow have experience related to your field. Look for internship programs and participate in them. Joining volunteer programs is also a good method to gain work-based learning experiences. Finally, having a mentor is a great option if you want to learn from those who have the experience and expertise in the field you’re interested in.

Career planning is not just for those who are in the workplace already. In fact, making a career plan is a very crucial step every college student has to take to ensure that they will have the job that is personally and professionally fulfilling.

Career Planning and the Importance of Smart Networking

When it comes to doing a job search and career planning, it is important that you do networking the right way. Basically, there are two types of networking – bumper car networking and smart networking.

Bumper car networking happens when you just show up at an event or a social function and meet someone with whom you chat about different things. You then give out your business card and end the conversation being hopeful that you both are going to meet each other in the future.

Meanwhile, smart networking is about building relationships and not just contacts. This is the kind of networking you would want to do as this is the more fruitful and beneficial one. Below are tips you can use as you try to have meaningful conversations with people who may eventually be helpful to your career.

1. Be ready. Always be prepared with a couple of openers you can use when you meet a variety of people. Being ready with your lines will prevent you from fumbling for words when you’re in front of someone already.

You could perhaps ask what brought them to the event, or what they think about the presentation.
2. Come up with a topic to talk about.

One of the reasons why many people fear having small talks is that they have no idea what they should talk about. Well, the truth is that there is just so much to talk about, and the problem is that you don’t know how to start talking about something. Thus, make a list in your head of the things you think will be interesting for the people you are about to meet.

3. Be attentive and a good listener.

After you have given your opening statement, patiently wait for the response. Never rush the person to answer you or end whatever it is that they are saying. Show that you are interested to hear what they are saying.

4. Find something you have in common.

Once you have heard the other person’s story, that would be a good time for you to share some thoughts and experiences of yours. Ideally, you want to mention something that you both know or understand. This way, you can build a bond that may eventually be the reason for the two of you to keep in touch in the future.

5. Have a good ending.

If you think it would benefit you to keep in touch with that person, then by all means express it. You could even invite him or her to have coffee with you some time soon.

Being prepared, having an agenda, and being sincerely interested in meeting people are the ingredients to effective and smart networking that would help you gain relationships rather than mere contacts. These are the people who may soon play an important role in your career planning and success.

Are You Creating Your Own Job Stress that May Affect Your Career Planning and Advancement?

When it comes to the idea of work-life balance, we tend to focus primarily on finding ways to make our job less stressful. Many of us believe that reducing the stress we get from our job makes our life better. This is good thinking, of course, but the question is always how you could make your job not stressful. How do you know which aspect of it gives you stress anyway? Is it how you do your career planning? Is it the people you work with? Your boss perhaps? Or your own pursuit of career advancement?

What many of us don’t realize is that they are doing things that create the very stress they want to get rid of. Thus, if you don’t want to suffer any more job stress, you must first know what’s causing them. Listed below are some common tendencies workers have that lead to more stress at work.

1. PROCRASTINATION

If you’re a person who is likely to wait until the last minute to do something important, like to complete a task, it’s no surprise you’re often stressed out! There’s nothing really wrong with waiting, especially if you are given so much time to do an assignment. The problem is that you can never know what other projects or tasks will be assigned to you that will keep you busy for some time. Also, it is possible that the resources you need are not available anymore when you’re about to do your task.

What to do: Do what you have to do the moment you’re asked to do it.

2. OVERWORKING

If you’re really confident about your skills and you tend to take on more than you can actually handle, you’re giving yourself something to stress about. Of course it’s fulfilling to do everything, but it won’t be any fun if it turns out giving you lots of stress.

What to do: Prioritize your work and don’t bite more than you can chew.

3. OVERREACTING

If someone asks you to do something, do you feel like you have to do it immediately? Stress can be the result of too much pressure, especially if you think that everything you’re asked to do is urgent! You’ve got to learn how to choose which tasks require your immediate attention.

What to do: Ask your supervisor when the assignment is due, and then check your schedule so you may prioritize work accordingly.

4. LACK OF SELF-CONFIDENCE

Many of us feel like they have no right to speak up to the management about anything. While it is often the case in workplaces, it is still important that you know when to speak up and when to not.
What to do: If you feel that you’re being given more work than you can take on, try to approach your immediate supervisor and seek some advice.

Although stress can never be totally eliminated, there are ways you could reduce it so it won’t affect your quality of life, career planning, and career advancement.

On the Way to a Fulfilling Career

Career planning knows no time and boundaries, and for all we know, it is a continuous process no matter how successful or confused we are with our current jobs. It helps us learn new things and develop to be the best person that we can be no matter where we are in our lives right now. Some people start planning their careers even at a young age and whether what happens next is desirable or not, they just keep on going until they reach their goals. The key in career planning is to always, always follow your heart because it will always be about you and your happiness in the end.

There are times when no matter how much you plan your career, you end up and still stuck  in a career you hate, feeling like you go to a prison cell everyday. But then again, it is entirely up to you to turn it all around and make your current job a fulfilling one. The question is how? Yes, there are people who are content to be regular employees, no positions whatsoever and then there are those who are called the lucky ones, the ones on top, the executives who can command any given time of the day. And there are those who are in the middle, the managers who are responsible for making sure that the regular employees do their jobs well yet still report to the executives at the end of the day. If the operation didn’t do well, they will have to answer to the big bosses. They have people reporting to them and they act as the people in between who relay information from the regular employees to the top executives. Their jobs are probably the most difficult yet they remain underrated.

The job of middle managers is very stressful that is why you would normally hear them complain and some work very hard to get promoted to escape the tremendous demands of their job. Now, you naturally have an option to switch careers to find fulfillment or to stay in the same company with the same goal. It is entirely up to you. Mind setting and changing your perspectives can definitely help but if these won’t be able to help you, we have here some tips on how to find fulfillment in your career. At least you know where and how to start.

1. Explore – explore not just your options but the company and the people you work with. Take time to reflect about yourself and your current situation, there must be a reason why you are holding on to that job for so long. Think of the many possibilities where you might learn to love your job, but if you really don’t, explore other options or careers that spark your interest enough to make you switch to it.

2. Prepare yourself – invest on trainings and courses that will enhance your skills and make you in demand in the workforce. This will speed up your dream for a promotion.

3. Overcome your weaknesses – work on your fears and weaknesses, try to overcome them slowly to achieve your maximum potential as a person, a worker, and as a friend.

4. Plan a strategy – once you identify what you really want to do, focus on that, write down a strategic plan to achieve your goal whether it is switching to another company or stay in the current one.

The way to a fulfilling career is entirely up to you because you are in total control of your body and mind and you can do whatever you choose to do. So always follow your heart and never give up to live the life you have always wanted.

With that said, it is important that you carry out your research, and assess yourself thoroughly. Doing so will help you find out what you want to do for the rest of your life. Remember, people who have failed in their careers ended up in the situation that they are currently in, because they failed to do their research.

We all have our comfort zones. However, we cannot simply learn and grow if we choose to stay there. One of the common mistakes people make is to choose to remain in their comfort zones. Of course, it is very understandable, because everything is easy and you are basically familiar with everything. On the other hand, if you choose to go out of your shell and try out new things, you will be able to have the opportunity to discover things about yourself.

Career Planning: Preparing For Roadblocks Ahead

Creating a clear career plan is one of the best ways you can identify whatever it is that you need to advance in your career. Not only this, effective career planning will also serve as your road map to achieving your goals.

As you do career planning for building a great career, you should focus not only on the positive steps you need to take to develop your skills. It is important that you also prepare yourself for the roadblocks and pitfalls that may eventually come your way.

AGE
Needless to say, age is one of the main factors employers look at when hiring employees. Although being an older employee can be an advantage because you have the experience that others don’t, there are still certain traits of older workers most employers don’t prefer. For instance, it is generally believed that older people are not so enthusiastic about learning new computer skills and how to use modern tools and gadgets. Older employees also tend to be concerned about the benefits they can get from their employers. Thus, if you decide to change careers or jobs after hitting middle age, be ready to receive fewer benefits than younger workers.

EXPERTISE OR KNOWLEDGE
Regardless of whether you already have a college degree, this doesn’t mean that you have the particular knowledge or background required for a certain career. Knowledge here pertains to your education, training, experience and certification. Therefore, you have to keep an open mind to the possibility that you may need to take additional courses or undergo specialized training programs in the future so that you may qualify for the job you are targeting.

TRENDS
As we all know, it is hard to predict how stable a company will be a couple of years from now. It seems that every industry is vulnerable to economic turmoil and instability. It is, therefore, important that you develop various transferable skills, which you can use in any kind of job or industry. Also, you should keep yourself up-to-date with all the trends and changes in the industry you want to engage in. This way, you will have an idea of what the future of your profession will be like.

EXPERIENCE
Most employers prefer job candidates who have vast experience in certain fields. But this doesn’t mean that they favor job hoppers. There is a big difference between a person who keeps on switching jobs and a person who has spent many good years in various industries. If you get rejected for a job because you lack experience, don’t get discouraged. Like what coaching and mentoring experts advise job seekers, take the time to explore other opportunities where you can also gain valuable experience.
